What age did you begin playing a musical instrument? I was 6 when I started playing the recorder at school. When I was 9, I started to learn the violin.
Why did you choose the instrument you play? I didn’t! While I was growing up, the UK government paid for all children to learn an instrument in elementary school, and violin was the only instrument available at my school. But it was a happy accident – I loved it right away.
Who is your favorite composer, and favorite work? Why? No matter how I’m feeling, I always love Mozart – his music just reminds me how beautiful life is. But my favorite single work is probably Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto, it’s so tender and passionate.
How many years have you been performing with Symphony in C? 2008-2009 is my second season with Symphony in C.
What’s your favorite part about playing in Symphony in C? Working with Rossen is fantastic, and I like the energetic atmosphere of the orchestra.
Where do you aspire to be in ten years? And what do you plan to do? I hope that wherever I am, I will be making a positive difference, through music, to my community and to our larger world community. Music is such a powerful force in life; it can overcome so many boundaries and challenges, and my aim is to embrace that power as fully as possible.
What are you currently listening to on your I-pod? Osvaldo Golijov’s opera Ainadamar – it’s absolutely stunning.
What other interests outside of music do you share, if any? I love to travel – it’s inspiring to get to know new people and places, and it opens my eyes to all kinds of new ways to look at the world.
